Riehen, June 2026

Dear visitors, collectors, artists, art lovers, and friends,

The centrepiece of this exhibition, painted by Otto Dix whilst he was a prisoner of war in Colmar in 1945, is, sadly, all too relevant to our own times, which are dominated by wars where there ought to be none.

That is not the only reason why this work is so important to me personally. Ever since my earliest youth and my ‘first encounter’ with the Isenheim Altarpiece – when I probably felt much the same as Otto Dix did – this masterpiece by Matthias Grünewald, painted between 1512 and 1516, has been the most important work I have ever had the privilege of encountering; it opened my eyes at a very young age and ultimately led me to embark on the path I have been following unwaveringly for almost 40 years now, a path that has given me so much.

This summer, Otto Dix will thus enter into an intense dialogue with works by his contemporaries Hermann Hesse, August Macke, Lyonel Feininger, The “Brücke” artists and Pablo Picasso, and will hopefully inspire you, dear visitors.

I would like to thank my loyal friends; whose kindness and support enable me to work freely and successfully.

Yours truly

Marc Triebold
